Learning to Listen

A couple of years ago I attended a baptism.  One of the speakers shared a wonderful story that really touched me.  He told a story about a man who worked in a place with lots of sawdust.  One day he lost his pocket watch.  It was a very special gift from his grandfather and was a tremendous value to him.  He asked everyone to help him find it.  Nobody could find it.  He stayed after work, feeling really distressed.  As he sat there in the silence, he heard the “tick, tick, tick”  of the watch.  He was able to go right over and uncover it.

Life is like that.  There are so many noises, that we have a very difficult time hearing the things that matter most.  We too need to spend time in silence in order to hear, and find, and discover, and create valuable things in our lives.  God speaks in the silence.  One man said that silence is God’s language.

You remember what the Lord taught us about this in the Old Testament.  1Kings 19:11-12  “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:  And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still, small voice.”  We must learn to listen to the still, small voice.

There are two types of noise; external and internal.

It’s possible that it may be silent around you but noisy inside you.  Or it may be silent inside and noisy outside.  The ideal for listening effectively is to have silence both inside yourself and outside yourself.  We know about the things that create noise around us, and we need to make our best efforts to create silence when we are seeking inspiration.  But often we are not aware of the things that create noise inside of us.  Pride, anger, envy, jealousy, ego, judging, doubt, discouragement, fear.

Make time for quiet moments- the Lord whispers.

Yet so few can handle the quiet.  Many can’t or won’t tolerate silence.  Myriad young people especially think they need music and noise constantly.  Phones, iPods, radios, movies- something always in their ear.

If there is something in your life that is making you “hard of hearing;” something you think, see, hear, say, feel or do, then have the courage and the discipline to eliminate it from your life.

“To better hear His voice, it would be wise to turn down the volume control of the worldly noise in our lives. If we ignore or block out the promptings of the Spirit for whatever reason, they become less noticeable until we cannot hear them at all. Let us learn to hearken to the promptings of the Spirit and then be eager to heed them.”  (Dieter Uchtdorf )

We must be able to hear and respond to the voice of the Lord through the midst of all the babble of voices that surround us.  Hearing and heeding this voice will keep us from becoming barbarians!

One of the best habits we could create in ourselves is to set aside a little time each day for silent study, thought and prayer.  I try to do this throughout the day, but I always do it early in the morning.  For me, first thing in the morning, when my mind and body are refreshed, this habit works the very best.  Doing it first thing in the morning also helps remind me to hone in during the day, and guard myself from the noise.

Begin today!  Set aside some quiet time to listen.  Listening is an art the should be developed throughout your entire life.  Practice, practice, practice.

Shine Wherever You Are

“Father, where shall I work today?’
And my love flowed warm and free.
Then he pointed out a tiny spot
And said, ‘Tend that for me.’
I answered quickly, ‘Oh no, not that!
Why, no one would ever see,
No matter how well my work was done.
Not that little place for me.’
And the word he spoke, it was not stern;
He answered me tenderly:
‘Ah, little one, search that heart of thine;
Art thou working for them or for me?
‘Nazareth was a little place,
And so was Galilee.”
—Meade MacGuire

To each of us is given the wonderful privilege and awesome responsibility to make a positive difference in the world.  It may be with a small child or with an entire nation, but shine we must!

Consider the wonderful Old Testament story of Esther.  Ahasuerus is seeking for a new queen.  Mordecai presents Esther and she pleases the king and is chosen as queen.  Mordecai, the Jew, refuses to bow to Haman, who then arranges a decree to kill all the Jews in the kingdom.  Mordecai and the Jews mourn and fast because of the king’s decree.  Mordecai tells Esther to go before the king to plead their cause.  To do this, she would be putting her life at risk, since it was forbidden to go before the king.  The penalty was death unless the king put forth his golden sceptre.  Mordecai then says to her, “and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? (Esther 4:14)  Esther determines to enter the presence of the king, even at the peril of her life. The king receives Esther and she later reveals Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews.  Ahasuerus then reverses the decree calling for the destruction of the Jews.  Consider the enormity of what she accomplished!  Surely, Esther came into the kingdom for “such a time.”  And in our sphere of influence, if we will listen and act, we will have the privilege and opportunity to be a great force for good to those within our circle of influence.  Indeed, you have come “for such a time as this.”  And there are things that you can accomplish that no one else can.

Neal A. Maxwell taught that, “though we live in a failing world, we have not been sent here to fail. Recall the new star that announced the birth at Bethlehem? It was in its precise orbit long before it so shone. We are likewise placed in human orbits to illuminate. Divine correlation functions not only in the cosmos but on this planet, too.”

If you and I are receptive and willing, we can be led to an exact place and purpose. Many times, qualified and prepared individuals have shown up in my life at the precise moment I needed them.  And likewise, it has been humbling for me to be led to help others in their moment of need, with skills and abilities that the Lord has given me.  He is perfectly aware of you and desires to bless and help you.  And He desires to use you as an instrument in His hands to bless others.   “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28(italics added)

So let’s follow Christ’s perfect example and “be about our Father’s business!”  And what is His business?  To comfort, inspire, strengthen and bless each one of His children.  May we become qualified instruments in His hands to assist in His great purpose!

The Captain of the soul

William Ernest Henley penned these moving, poetic words.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

To me this poem speaks of a determination to never give up, to absolutely refuse to acquiesce to circumstance.

In one sense, we are in charge; we decide what our life will be.  And yet, in another sense, there is a Captain with far superior rank.  To Him we all must answer!  He is in charge.

The Soul’s Captain

by Orson F Whitney

Art thou in truth?
Then what of Him who bought thee with His blood?
Who plunged into devouring seas
And snatched thee from the flood,
Who bore for all our fallen race
What none but Him could bear-
That God who died that man might live
And endless glory share.

Of what avail thy vaunted strength
Apart from His vast might?
Pray that His light may pierce the gloom
That thou mayest see aright.

Men are as bubbles on the wave,
As leaves upon the tree,
Thou, captain of thy soul! Forsooth,
Who gave that place to thee?
Free will is thine-free agency,
To wield for right or wrong;
But thou must answer unto Him
To whom all souls belong.

Bend to the dust that ‘head unbowed, ‘
Small part of life’s great whole,
And see in Him and Him alone,
The captain of thy soul.

Christmas Gift For Christ

Father gave us the gift of His Only Begotten Son.  Christ willingly gave His life for each of us.  We can give something back; something that will really please them.

The best gift you could give God, or man, is to make the most of yourself!

How about a promise to give more time and devotion to God this year?  What about more frequent and faithful prayer?  Or more obedience?  Wouldn’t a commitment to spend more quality time with our spouse and children be far better than anything we could buy them?  Of course.  How about overcoming a bad habit and replacing it with a wonderful one?  How about the determination to lose those extra pounds?  These, and others, are by far, some of the best gifts we can give to God and our loved ones this Christmas!  Give the best gift this Christmas… a new and improved you.  Merry Christmas!

You Never Solve Your Problems

You have to outgrow them!

Carl Jung has been attributed with this wonderful quote, “You never solve your problems, you have to out grow them.”  I love it! You and I have to grow and grow and grow.  And as we do, the problems and challenges that once caused us so much grief will shrink into little disturbances that we can easily handle.

What an empowering thought!  You can outgrow all of your problems! It makes perfect sense.  Let me illustrate with swimming.  If you were to take a man, who cannot swim, and drop him 10 meters off shore, he would have a big problem.  But you have outgrown that problem and could swim to shore, no problem.  Well, what if we took you out 500 meters from shore?  Many of you would have a very hard time getting back to shore alive.  Can you outgrow that problem?  Of course!  I have competed in several short-distance triathlons and so I could swim in from around a mile out, but beyond that, I would have a problem.  Have others outgrown that problem?  Of course!  An IronMan triathlete could easily swim in from 2.5 miles out, and count it as a work out.  You see, it’s all about our personal development, our growth rings.  How big are your growth rings?

Orison Swett Marden wrote, “Obstacles and challenges will seem big or small to you according to whether you are big or small.”  So our obstacles are actually opportunities to see where we are in our growth, and to do something about it!

A great and painful lesson

I vividly remember competing in a tough (for me) triathlon in Costa Rica.  I was not aware that the triathlon was going to take place until about a week before the race.  I had slacked in my training because, as I wrongly assumed, I didn’t have anything to train for.  Well, when the time to perform has arrived, the time to prepare has passed! And I was not prepared.  That triathlon kicked my backside!  I had not outgrown it through discipline, preparation and training.  And so it was bigger than me.  That morning before the race, one of the competitors, who is an IronMan racer, rode his bike about 50 miles BEFORE the race “for a warm up.”  He was definitely bigger than that race.

How do we get bigger?

So we ask ourselves, “How can we increase our growth?”  The answer:  the Law of the Harvest.  You and I will reap what we sow, and in exact proportion as well.

Life is like a garden.  We have to get good nutrients, not only in the body, but in the mind and spirit as well.  We’ve got to pull weeds, mix in fertilizer and get plenty of sun shine….light and truth!  How can we do all this?

The Daily Routine

Failure is fertilizer.  Try new things.  Get out of your comfort zone.  Discomfort is one of the best indications of growth.  Do not stay and vegetate in your little corner of the earth.  Get Out And Live!  And learn and grow from your mistakes and failures.

Input Determines Output.  Feed your mind and spirit with great content.  Study from the scriptures and the best books everyday.  Miss a meal, but don’t miss your daily dose of great truths.  Study the lives of great men and women who have really developed themselves, and model the manner in which they outgrew their challenges.

Pull the weeds.  Get rid of the negative people and input in your life.  Throw away your television and your video games.  Do whatever it takes to keep the porn, the violence and the filth out of your home and out of your life!

We’ve also got to pull the toxic weeds of tobacco, alcohol, drugs and obesity.  They are destroying so many lives everyday.

Exercise and eat well everyday.  Be consistent and vigorous and you will quickly get the results you are longing for.  Discipline yourself to do it.  Don’t let up.  No excuses or “special occasions.”

And most importantly, invite the Light into your life by drawing closer to God.  Seek His help and guidance, spend time with Him and DO what He asks.

If you will work on these habits everyday, I promise that you will experience tremendous growth in your life that will bring you those wonderful rewards that have been reserved for those who are willing to pay the price.  Then, you will really begin to be bigger than your problems.

Please share with us a time when this principle has been true in your life.

The Ass, the Fox, and the Lion

You don’t have to climb over other people to get to the top.

If you’re in an organization or field that requires that….get out! We want to be people who are always lifting, building and serving those around us.  Do not tear others down to make yourself seem better or feel better.  You and I travel on a higher road than that!  If you desire to really ascend, then you must serve more.  We must stop tearing others down, falsely assuming it improves our position.

The true measure of our success will be determined by the quality and quantity of our service!

Mercury and the Woodman

The  best rewards in life are reserved for those who live with complete honesty and integrity.

We live in a world that is filled with lying and deceit, where it seems that almost everyone is out to get you, and you can’t trust anybody.  But even in a crowd of liars and cheats, we must remain honest.

Honesty will triumph.  Integrity will lead the way!

Do not lower your standards, no matter how bad it all gets.  There is far more at stake, than just temporal things.  Stay true in the darknessLet your high personal standards dictate how you live, so that there is no need for any to worry about your behavior, whether in a crowd of thieves or completely alone.

There are not enough soldiers, government officials or police officers in the world to control human behavior, and babysit the masses.  Control must come from within!

Life Is Easier When You Are Better

It’s a rather simple formula: the bigger you become, the smaller your problems will be.  Life is often hard, simply because we are too soft.  The more we discipline ourselves to grow and improve, the more capable and qualified we will be to handle life’s challenges and obstacles.  But if we are too easy on ourselves, then life will be hard on us.

CAVI is an acronym I love to use.  It stands for Consistent And Vigorous Improvement.  When we live by CAVI principles and habits everyday, life is so much more enjoyable, fulfilling and exciting.  Reach Upward!

The Wolf and the Lamb

Have you ever been in a situation where you were tempted to do something you knew you shouldn’t do, and you had a bad feeling about doing it?  And then you catch yourself trying to rationalize or justify doing it?  It happens too often to too many.  Justification and rationalization are deadly twins.  If we do not stop them with honesty and integrity, we will end up making choices that we will surely regret.  This is certainly not the way to a life of excellence, peace and fulfillment.  What a wonderful thing it is, to do the right things for the right reasons!

The Horse and the Groom

We all live according to priorities.  How do you know?  A priority is that thing to which you give your time and attention.  So take a good, honest look at what you are thinking and doing most of the time, and you will see what your priorities are…not what you say they are, but what they really are.  With that sobering perspective, most of us could use a reordering of our priorities.  This audio session will be very helpful.
