Are Your Homeschooled Children Socially Awkward?

No matter what approach you take to education. You have to make sure that your children learn how to socialize with young and old, rich and poor, religious and not, and every race and culture on the earth. Life is fantastic! Meeting people, making friends and having a positive influence on those around you makes life so good!

Are You Worried About Your Kids’ Social Skills?

A lot of parents worry about their kids’ social skills. And there is no bad with that. We all want our children to be socially competent and be able to have great relationships. Especially for those who are homeschooled, unschooled or those who follow an alternative way of education.

When people consider homeschooling one of the biggest questions arises: What about socialization? How can the kids be socialized?

Thus, I want to address that and make sure your kid doesn’t end up socially retarded.

I have worked with thousands of youth and I mentor all the time, so I have seen across the whole spectrum. Also, I have seen youths that struggle socially in private schools; public schools; homeschooling; unschooling; and world-schooling… As I traveled around the world and met people from different countries I have seen every spectrum.

Key Principles

So, there are few key principles there:

One of the biggest ones is that you -as a parent- have to develop those social skills. And here’s the great news.. everyone of us can be social leaders. Well, I personally was socially retarded and couldn’t have conversations with anyone. But I had to grow out of that, and I did it! And another great news is that if I did that, you can do it too!

There is a book that I really recommend called “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. If you haven’t read it, read it. If you have read it, then reread it.

It is not pure dependence. What you want for your children and for yourself is to speak with anyone, anywhere and have an intelligent conversation and build a good relationship. Therefore, it is not pure independence. Instead, it is getting out and creating those experiences.

The science behind it is absolutely incredible. I am reading a great book right now that says.. The connection between parents and children when they are little babies; when they are toddlers; has a HUGE impact on how the child act socially later in life. So make sure to make that connection with your kids.

How Did Our Kids Become Confident

As we traveled to many countries and lived abroad, we met extremely poor people; extremely wealthy people; people speaking different languages; people with all different background and races… just all of those across the board. We have been deliberate about taking our children meet people and having great conversations. We have modeled it for them and we have helped them be engaged in that process. So now our kids are really confident and it is so fun to watch them just walk up confidently and have great meaningful conversations.
So be deliberate about that!
